Moving Company Item Restrictions

What Items Movers Won’t Move – A Guide from America’s Nationwide Moving Relocation Service

You’ve done your due diligence with planning and scheduling your upcoming move, and now you’re ready to begin packing. Before you start wrapping and boxing your belongings, it’s important to understand which items are restricted or prohibited during a professional move.

At America’s Nationwide Moving Relocation Service, we are committed to ensuring your move is safe, smooth, and stress-free. That’s why we provide every customer with a clear checklist of items movers cannot transport. Please note that restricted items may vary depending on the moving company, so it’s always best to prepare in advance and decide how to handle these items before packing day.

Some of these items may seem obvious — like gasoline or loaded firearms — while others may surprise you, such as wax candles or indoor plants. To help you get organized, we’ve outlined what cannot be moved, what may be moved under certain conditions, and which personal items are best kept with you during your relocation.

🚫 Prohibited Items

For the safety of your belongings, our team, and federal/state regulations, the following items cannot be transported under any circumstances. Hazardous items should be disposed of properly through your local city or county disposal services.

Prohibited items include:

  • Alkaline and lead-acid (automobile) batteries

  • Household cleaning products

  • Corrosive chemicals or poisons

  • Lawn and garden chemicals

  • Flammable or explosive materials

  • Gas and oil products

  • Compressed gas cylinders

  • Ammunition, including gunpowder

  • Wax candles

  • Live animals or plants

  • Illegal items or substances

Additional restrictions may apply at the discretion of America’s Nationwide Moving Relocation Service.

Moving Tip: This may be a great opportunity to downsize and replace certain hazardous items once you’ve settled into your new home.

⚠️ Restricted Items

The following items may be included in your shipment with prior written approval from your moving coordinator. However, please note that these items are shipped at your own risk, and claims for loss or damage may not be covered.

Restricted items include:

  • Batteries powering personal mobility devices

  • Cordless power tools

  • Scuba tanks

  • Firearms (must be unloaded)

  • Clean gasoline cans and fuel storage containers

  • Alcoholic beverages

Moving Tip: Keep in mind that temperature, humidity, or freezing conditions during transport may damage sensitive items. Consider whether these should travel with you instead.

💼 Personal & Sentimental Items

Certain belongings are best kept with you during your move — either because they’re irreplaceable or you’ll need quick access to them.

We recommend keeping the following items with you:

  • Wedding and photo albums

  • Jewelry and precious metals

  • Family heirlooms

  • Children’s artwork

  • Passports and IDs

  • Medications (prescriptions and over-the-counter)

  • House and car keys

  • Mobile phones, chargers, and small electronics

  • Title documents and financial records (checkbooks, credit cards, insurance, etc.)

  • Professional files and school records

  • Eyeglasses or contacts

  • Bed linens, towels, and basic toiletries (toothbrush, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.)

  • Paper towels, trash bags, and small hand tools

Moving Tip: To avoid digging through boxes when you arrive, we recommend preparing a First Night Essentials Box with items you’ll need immediately in your new home.
